Franz Gruss: At home

The life story of Franz Gruss mirrors the historical events of the first half of the 20th century. Franz Gruss lived through the coexistence and clash of German and Czech nationalities, his studies and first artistic achievements in Vienna, his surprising departure to seclusion in the middle of the mountains and forests near the town of Stříbrná, as well as two world wars, prison camps in Siberia and finally his post-war exile to Austria. All these events left their imprint on his work.

He painted nature, landscape and everyday life of the inhabitants of the Erzgebirge. Civilian subjects were often interspersed with serious themes and the motif of death or misfortune.

The historian Jan Šícha will introduce the author at the opening. Visitors to the town museum will be able to see paintings and prints by Franz Gruss from Tuesday 3 September to Sunday 29 September 2024.
