On Tuesday 23 July at 19.00 Marian Friedl will perform on the Small Stage of the Chopin House. This musician of many faces and Beskydy native will perform the instruments of Wallachian shepherds, in which he found the forgotten sound of the Beskydy hills.
Shepherd's whistle, fujarka, end-blower, dvoyanka, kobza, bagpipes, grumle, small dulcimer, rattle, salašovka, ocarina, nightingale... Forgotten musical instruments come to life in the hands of the famous Beskydy bard Marian Friedl. Come and listen to their sound and talk about them. And how about playing them!?
Marian was born in 1979 and lives in his native Beskydy region, from where he travels all over the world to give concerts. Music in its many forms has been with him since childhood. He has played the traditional music of his native region in his dulcimer band, the music of his grandfather's youth at parties with rural musicians, and the popular songs of his parents' and his own generation with his peers. At the conservatory he studied classical and jazz music, and at university he focused on ethnomusicology.
He is devoted to reviving the playing of forgotten instruments of the Beskids, music production, popularizing folk music and improvisation. He performs on double bass, clarinet, folk flutes, bagpipes, kobza, small dulcimer and other instruments in genres ranging from classical music, folk music, world music and jazz.
His lifelong passion is the flute instruments of Wallachian shepherds, in which he found the forgotten sound of the Beskydy hills. Since the age of fifteen, he has gathered his experience in this field by visiting producers and players on the Czech-Slovak-Polish border, researching museum and private collections, listening to recordings, studying literature, and creating his own instruments and music.
In 2017, he received the Anděl Music Prize for his album Beránci a vlci (Lambs and Wolves), and in 2015 he recorded the album Mateřština with Jiří Slavík, which won the Anděl Prize in 2016. He was nominated for an Angel Award in 2018 for his album Divé goose with Trio Jitka Šuranská, and in 2020 and 2021 he received nominations for the M-S Jantar Region Award for his albums Beskydská Odysea and 11 PODOBOBOB LÁSKY. In 2011, he spoke at the TEDxTalks conference with his talk The Recreation of Reality, aimed at popularising improvisation.
