The Stabat Mater dolorosa (Latin for Standing Mother of Sorrows) is a medieval hymn that depicts the pain of the Virgin Mary under the cross of Christ. The text of the hymn is based on the prophecy of Simeon, according to which a sword pierced the Heart of the Mother of Jesus Christ. The text of the hymn has been set to music many times throughout history. The Stabat Mater by the Italian Baroque composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi is one of the most famous settings of this medieval verse text. Pergolesi's arrangement is for alto, soprano, strings and basso continuo. It is Pergolesi's most famous sacred work. Listen also to the Biblical Songs, a very intimate work, one of the most intimate in Antonín Dvořák's entire life's work.
