An American journalist, author and humourist, Mark Twain visited Marienbad with his family in August of 1891. He dubbed the town an "Austrian health factory". He published his experiences in Marienbad in a London magazine under the title "The Tramp Abroad Again".
Twain heaped praise on Marienbad, calling it "the most comfortable and up-to-date town on the Continent, as pretty as anyone could wish…" and added "We have never taken such a picturesque journey. There may only be two or three streets, but they are pretty ones. Standing at the lower end of town, you are taken aback by the surprising harmony of its colours, fresh and merry…"
